On May 28th, 2016, our department warmly welcomed nearly 60 alumni of the meteorology major class of 1956 to return to their Alma Mater and celebrate the 60th anniversary of entering college.
The gathering was held in the morning of 28th inside the physics building, the construction of which they had participated in. With the youngest being 77 years of age and the oldest already reaches 86, they were all invigorating and in high spirits, warmly greeting, reviving memories and cheerfully recalling old school times. The host, Prof. Jietai Mao, broadcasted pictures about recent life of Profs Hong Yin and Bolin Zhao, both of whom used to be their teachers and are now our department’s professors emeritus. Also shown are historical documents and pictures about the life, work and study of the class of 1956, and photos and greetings from alumni who were unable to attend. Prof. Yongyun Hu, the chair of the department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, introduced the current progresses and future plans of our department. After the gathering, a group photo was taken at the stairs in front of the physics building.
A total of 160 students were admitted in the year of 1956 as meteorology major. Although this class has experienced considerable hardships in their academy career, many of them have become leaders and pillars of national meteorological services. They have made extraordinary contributions to scientific education and research, and operational management, and have greatly promoted the development of atmospheric sciences and related fields in our country. “Over the sixty years they had endured many challenges and difficulties. Today they deserve this glory and splendidness.” In the past, present, and future, they are always the priceless treasure of our department. Best wishes to them and their family! Wish them health, longevity, and happiness!
